Charlie P . . . (of “Joe & Charlie”) . . . gone now . . . but not forgotten

On my way into a meeting Thursday night, I thought I heard someone say, “Charlie died.” Today, I received an email that must be making the rounds, about Charlie P. and seems to confirm his passing. Being primarily an East Coast AAer all my sober life, I didn’t have a lot of exposure to “Joe and Charlie” but I did listen to their tapes (that dates me!) in early sobriety. And, those tapes were strong, helpful, full of wisdom and love for the program. Below are the emails I received – I am glad they are filled with gratitude and not idolatry because that, to me, is the Tao of AA.

Charlie P.

A man passed away last night that has carried a message to hundreds of
thousands of us all over the world. He was a great messenger, a
tireless servant, and a dear dear friend. He carried the message of the
Big Book and keep it alive in a time when most of our fellowship had
lost touch with our basic principles – your effect has been felt – your
footprint has been left – and I thank you Charlie.

Charlie P, along with Joe McQ and in later years Joe McC, traveled the
world for over 35 years starting fires of enthusiasm for our basic text.

The playing of Joe and Charlie tapes were the staple of our first
California 4D style meetings in 1987. Although our group was first
spawned by Del Heckendorf in Palm Beach, Florida, our ‘informational’
meetings might never had gotten off the ground, save for
this wonderful duo. Our group is only one of many who owe their
continued existence to the blessings of the many years of dedicated
service of Joe and Charlie. May their spirit live on to help
newcomers realize the life saving message of our basic text.
