You Are Here: The ‘Wet House’ Where Alcoholics Can Keep Drinking
By BENOIT DENIZET-LEWIS
It’s always 5 o’clock at St. Anthony’s.

Very thought provoking especially after I just returned from a Fifth Tradition Meeting.  Prior to the meeting, I was more uncomfortable with the notion that an institution would allow drunks to remain drinking while under their “wing.”

“Each group has but one primary purpose — to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers.” And within that primary purpose is the singularity of purpose — and reminds me that I am an expert in not drinking alcohol, not an expert in where someone should sleep.

At least there are the 3/5% who stop drinking every year. It would be a challenging enviorement to come up with taskes for the residence that indicate there are higher expectations of them. Who cleans? What happens if there is violence? Are there opportunities for self governace and responsibility sharing for the enviornment? The comment from one of the residents that he was there to hang on to what little dignity he had left may hold some answers if explored.
