Our First Year Comes to a Close
Welcome to the last issue of our first full year in publication. Whew! It has been quite a ride, as is usual with a start-up, especially a print venture in these days of electronic communication. It took many people to make it all happen and there isn’t space enough to name them all, so we’d like to send out a huge thank you to everyone who made it possible for us to get this far so far. To all of our advertisers, readers and writers: thank you for your support and contributions, for your encouragement and feedback, and most especially for your service in the fight against the harsh and unforgiving world of addiction.
OUR FRIENDS IN ARIZONA
The seeds for this project, Together New York Edition, were planted by Bill Brown (now deceased) who started publishing Together AZ 20 years ago and who was joined by his wife Barbara Nicholson-Brown 17 years ago in this effort, one that she continues on her own today. Together New York would most likely not be in existence today were it not for their example. So, as our thanks to them, we are dedicating most of this issue to articles that were first published in their pages.
Most of the articles that we are including in this section were written by professionals who work with addicts in treatment centers, mostly in Arizona. But the disease of addiction does not change from one state to another, so we’re sure you will find much helpful information here.
OUR USUAL FORMAT
If you are a regular reader of Together, you will notice that some of our standard features – The Together Interview, 12 Questions for…, and Great Alcoholics in History, to name the most popular ones – are not in this issue. But they will be back for our first anniversary issue in July, so stay tuned.
Meanwhile, in our New York style and already established tradition of bringing you timely, entertaining and instructive articles, we have two great cover stories and a PLUS feature review brought to you by three of our regular contributors: Lesley Logan with a cover story on Matthew Lombardo, Broadway playwright and author of the current play “High,” at the Booth Theater starring the amazing Kathleen Turner (did you catch The New York Times piece on her in the Sunday, April 3, Arts & Leisure section?); Ames K. Sweet with a story on how addiction has changed the tenor of our American Dream; and Kurt Brokaw with a movie and book review of the Prohibition era in our country.
We also have a book review of Sammy Hagar’s new memoir, by Tom Sinclair. And we welcome Tony Murphy, cartoonist.
Thank you as always for reading. Check out our new, updated website and please become our friend on Facebook, send us your comments, stories, ideas. In other words, please do keep in touch. And let’s hope we have a second year as full and wonderful as this first one has been.
