Fight over God splits Toronto AA

Our neighbors to the north, in Toronto AA, are having their fair share of exposure in the media.  It’s an interesting dilemma; it seems that Toronto AA removed two agnostic meetings from their “meeting list” because those groups chose to rewrite the Steps.  On one hand I can understand an agnostic/atheist group removing the word “God” from the literature, but on the other hand — what if it goes further to remove “prayer” and “meditation?” Suddenly, the concept of the Twelve Steps could be compromised. What do you think? “Fight over God splits Toronto AA”

I believe that our founders, in their great wisdom, created a broad highway on which ALL can travel this path. I also believe that the foundation that was established decades ago are of such strength that they can weather these variations and that those who set themselves up as interpreters and gatekeepers of the tennets of AA violate the traditions that AA “ought never be organized” and that “our leaders are trusted servants and do not govern.”
Here in Indianapolis the Intergroup recently removed an “atheist” group for the same reason. So small mindedness is not limited ot our brothers and sisters to the north.

I think that if the group spends more time on recovery into action and less time on wordplay and reinventing the wheel, the wisdom to know the difference would be upon them.

AA is not aligned with any organization or institution, it just happens to borrow from some of them. Please ignore the number of times you have said the Lords Prayer at the end of a meeting or heard the St Francis prayer or read it in the AA literature. AA simply reflects the majority of the original members religious affiliations. Thank “God” for the one brave soul who saved the day by adding “of your understanding” after the word God. Would that include No God or Maybe God? AA’s greatest vulnerability is from within. Looks to be getting a little intolerant out there in spiritual land. Somebody is a little scared maybe?
