I chuckled when I saw that the Irish Times ran an article: How US obsession with addiction has spawned a rehab industry, because I thought how like the Irish (I can say this because I am 98% Irish) that they are turning sobriety into an addiction! Even though the arguments set forth by the author, Lara Marlowe, are logical much of the substantiating evidence is weak, like “It’s very much a carry-over from the temperance movement of the 1800s….”
Nevertheless the last sentence was a little disturbing — that the rehab culture perpetuates the notion that addiction is a lifelong struggle and does not allow people to move on with their lives. I have to remind myself that recovery is a long and winding road with many bridges back to life and its up to me to take them.
