This month, alcoholism and drug addiction seen as a medical problem, has gotten article coverage in popular paper and journals. In the New York Times article, Rethinking Addiction’s Roots, and Its Treatment, we hear that medical establishments are finally giving doctors an option for alcohol and addiction residency programs.
Further, in an article in Elements Behavioral Health, Should addiction treatment be covered the same way as heart disease treatment?, it is stated:
But when the patient is an addict – addicted to drugs or alcohol – the all-too-often attitude on the part of physicians is that the person should be referred to a psychiatrist or go to a 28-day treatment program.
Though long-time coming, it is a huge step in the right direction. Dr. Silkworth would most definitely be pleased.
